When shopping for a home theater system, you need to make sure you buy from a reputable retailer. Shopping around for the products you need to obtain in order to create a home theater system can be very expensive. You do not want to pay too much for already high-priced products. Some retailers charge more for the products you can find in another store at a much lower price.

Some retailers will also sell you inferior products that will not give you the same quality as those from other stores. You do not want to pay a high price for a product that will break down very quickly.

Doing your research on the products you wish to buy, as well as on the retailers that sell them, is a very important first step when purchasing a home theater system. By the time you complete your system, you will end up spending almost $20,000. You do not want to throw away that amount of money by buying inferior products and buying from a retailer that will make you overpay.

Why Buy From National Retail Stores

The best place to purchase your home theater system is through retail stores that are recognized nationwide. These larger chains will be able to offer you many different types of products, and they are generally more trustworthy than smaller localized retailers. These retailers receive their products directly from the distributors of the manufacturers; therefore, they will be able to offer you warranties and rebates as well as other services. If any repairs are necessary, they are generally easier to deal with than smaller retailers. These larger retailers will generally employ a good number of experts that are officially licensed to work on and repair the brand of home theater system you purchased.

Getting the home theater room set up right is just as important as getting the right home theater components but in most cases you can’t change the room much. It may be your lounge or a special room but you are hardly going to knock out a wall just so that you can watch movies. Thus it is important to make sure that the home theater components fit into the size of the room and the existing layout. One such component of the system might be an HDTV or high definition television. There are virtually hundreds of different makes and models of HDTV’s so what do you go for and what considerations should you make so that it fits into your lounge or living room ? This article will help you decide.

The first thing to consider is the type of technology that is used to create the display. There are three types : Flat panel, projection and CRT technology

Flat panel technology – Plasmas and LCD

Flat panel technology is all the rage at the moment. Flat screens can attach to the wall so that you can save space in a small room. There are two types of flat screens that are popular at the moment. Those are Plasma and LCD. Both types have pros and cons. They have superior picture resolution to other types of HDTV s. However plasma TV’s can suffer from burn in, whereby a repetitive image will leave a ghosting image after some time. This is supposed to be getting better with the newer models. LCD’s have a limited viewing range before the picture becomes distorted.

Projection technology – Front and Rear Projector systems

There are two types of projection systems available : Front projection and rear projection.

Front projection is probably the most expensive HDTV you can get. It consists of a projector and a separate screen across the room. You would need a large room to fit this system in or maybe a room dedicated to your home theater system. With this system you can get large screens that have great pictures but the system is hard to set up and requires regular maintenance and tweaking to get the best picture.

Rear projection is a screen built into the HDTV. This is a considerably cheaper option. A rear projector system can be quite thin if it is using a micro projector but also suffers from limited viewing angles.

CRT Technology

The cathode ray tube technology is the one that most people are familiar with. Essentially they use a tube that makes them quite bulky but would be no bigger than a standard TV. In general a CRT HDTV would have a great range of color and a superior contrast ratio to the other types of technologies. The screen sizes are often smaller than the other technology types and the picture resolution is lower.

Selecting the best HDTV ultimately comes down to choice. If money and space are no object then a front projector system is your best bet. After that is comes down to how you prioritize the amount of money you want to spend, where the HDTV will go and what you plan to do with it (watch TV, watch movies or play games).

Video Cables defined

In simple terms Video cables are cables which used for transmitting video signal from one source to other. Sometime these are called Coaxial cables because most of the video cables available today are Coaxial cables.

Reasons for using different Video Cables

Different video cables are used for different purpose depending upon their applications. Some of the advantages of using these cables are:

1. Improving contrast ratio

2. Running cables longer

3. Getting less video distortion

4. Creating improved colors

Types of Video Cables

Types of video cables are based on its application. Some of most popular types or video cables are:

1. DVI Video Cables

2. Composite Video Cables

3. RGBHV Video Cables

4. Component Video Cables

5. S-Video Cables

6. Portable Projectors Video Cables

7. VGA Video Cables

DVI Video Cables

DVI or digital video interface cables are slightly larger then standard VGA cables. Ideally DVI cables creates digital link between the source of video and display device.

Composite Video Cables

The most commonly used video cables are composite video cables. These cables frequently used in Video Cassette Recorder and stereo devices. These cables are color-coded namely red, white and yellow where red is for right channel audio; white is for left channel audio and yellow for video signal. Only one cable is used for transmitting complete video signal. These are most commonly used cables type inspite of their low quality video/audio signals. The most common uses of these cables are television, Camcorder, VD player, and VCR’s.

RGBHV Video Cables

RGBHV Video Cables are similar to composite video cable but difference is in the fact that video signal in RGBHV cables are divided into five. These RGBHV cables divide the color of video signal into red, green and blue. Now days most of the high end monitors, HDTV used RGBHV connection to create the high definition video quality.

Component Video Cables

In Component video cables complete video signals are divided into three. This way it provides a better image quality then compare to composite cable or S-video cable. Jacks tips of component cables are Green, Red and Blue. Most of today’s DVD players, HD television sets tuners uses component cable connections.

S-Video Cables

These S- video cables are also know as SVHS cables and have variety of uses including latest television sets, satellite set top box, camcorder and SVHS VCR’s etc. S-video cables divide video signals into two components like luminance and chrominance. This is the main difference between S-video cables and composite video cables.

Portable Projectors Video Cables

As their name suggests portable projector video cable needs small room for connection. Due to this space scarcity most of the portable projector cables comes with 15 pin VGA. The projector is designed to sense the video signal it is receiving and process them accordingly. These portable projector video cables uses three out of 15 pins out connection designed for component video signal.

VGA Video Cables

These VGA cables are normal monitor cables and have three rows of fifteen pins. VGA cables are primarily used for PC to projector or PC to computer monitor connections

Defining the best home theater system is a matter of personal choice. Does a system worth $250,000 offer better quality than one that cost just $3000 to put together? Probably, but how many people can afford to spend a quarter of a million dollars on home entertainment?

Take my case for example. I’m a home theater nut who loves nothing better than being engrossed in my favorite movies in the confines of my own home. In my spare time it’s my relaxation. My system which includes the basics such as a television, DVD and speakers as well a a few optional extras set me back about $6000. I love it!

My two closest friends who happen to be my next door neighbors are also home theater nuts with rather deep pockets. Their interpretation of the best system includes the best that Bang And Olufsen have to offer and they are happy to fork out a six figure sum to get the best quality. What’s my point? It’s personal choice!

Satisfying Your Budget

Setting a budget you can afford and then doing a little due diligence is your first step towards finding your best system. Is your budget $3000? Do you realise that for this amount you can get yourself a very reliable and neat little system. A television, either plasma or LCD, a DVD player, speaker system and projection system plus accompanying cables for between $3-4000 is achievable. You simply need to spend a little time researching the options available.

The entry level home theater market is cut throat so bargains are there to be had. The majority of people searching for systems are usually looking at this end of the scale. Comparison shopping should be your number one priority. Spend some time checking out the various local stores. Don’t even consider making a decision until you’ve “sniffed out” each one. Once you’ve done this, then it’s time to get online. Why? Because this is where you will in all probability, find the best buys.

Home Theater Online

A search for the best systems will get you a myriad of results. Some sites are extensions of the major stores repeating many of the deals you checked out physically however, many aren’t and this gives you extra choice flexibility. Other sites offer any amount of information with some going the “extra mile” and offering mix’n'match alternatives or reviews on the “best bang for your buck” available. The message here is don’t be hasty and purchase the first television or DVD combination from the first salesperson you come across.

Personal choice is what it’s all about.

If you are searching for an accessory to maximize the usefulness of your home theater system, look no further than a digital video recorder. Sold under several brand names, and also available for rent by some cable companies, a digital video recorder is a device which delivers amazing audio sound and a high quality video experience to the cinema connoisseur. If you choose a DVR from your cable company, the recorder will be enclosed inside your cable box, saving room in the design of your home theater system.

A digital video recorder easily connects to your existing home theater system with a built in USB and Ethernet port. Weighing only around 15 pounds, a DVR records video in digital format to a hard disk drive which can, depending on the model you choose, record up to 300 hours of television entertainment. DVRs can also record two digital channels at one time while you are watching another show. The front panel shows you what is being recorded as it is happening, even with the power to your television switched off.

The digital video recorder keeps all of the sharpness and detail of the original programming so you are able to enjoy your preferred shows and movies using your home theater system whenever you desire, just as if they were actually on the air. If you have two favorite shows that happen to come on at the same time, your DVR will grab them both and save them for you, and you can go out to dinner knowing you have the freedom to watch either or both whenever you desire. You can even set the DVR one time only to record entire episodes of shows. Imagine how much more you will get out of your home theater system when you can record shows without having to buy blank recording media!

You can also use a digital video recorder along with your home theater system to pause and control live TV by rewinding, fast forwarding, or any of the other functions you are used to your VCR performing.

Some of the new televisions being sold have DVR capability built into them. This could be a good option if you are in the market for a new set to round out your home entertainment system. A digital video recorder can save you time and maximize your television viewing.

The recently released Sony PSP Slim 3000 has caused quite a controversy among new PSP owners who purchased their Sony PSP Slim 2000 units within the last few months. It has not even been a full year since Sony released the PSP Slim 2000, with its biggest feature being the ability to connect to a TV through AV output. Many are arguing that Sony’s latest addition to its handheld family should not even be considered an upgrade of the current model. Let’s take a deeper look into the features of the PSP 3000.

The 3000 was unveiled at the Leipzig gaming conference last week. The unit has the exact same dimensions as its counterpart, the Slim 2000. However, there were a few upgrades. Sony gave the PSP 3000 a new anti-glare screen, which is supposed to make playing the PSP while outside a bit more bearable. This new LCD screen also features a broader color palette than the older model, which accounts for a brighter, more vibrant picture. Along with this new screen, Sony added a built in microphone to the 3000, which will allow many people who have access to WiFi hotspots peppered through-out a large city to utilize the PSP as a phone-like device with the built in Skype software.

Along with these hardware improvements, the Slim 3000 also features a few cosmetic improvements as well. The ‘HOME‘ button no longer exists, as it has been replaced by a PSN button. It functions exactly the same as the old button, but instead has the Playstation logo instead of the word ‘HOME‘. Also, the brushed aluminum ring which was featured on both the PSP Fat, as it has become known, and the PSP Slim has been replaced with a more polished and thinner chrome ring. The edges of the PSP 3000 have also been smoothed a bit so that it feels more comfortable while holding it in your hand.

Sony PSP 3000 will be available this October, featuring the colors Piano Black and Mystic Silver. All in all, if you’re already a proud PSP 2000 Slim owner, you might want to skip this upgrade as the anti-glare screen is only a major upgrade if you find yourself playing a lot while outside. However, if you’re looking to purchase a PSP, the 3000 is the way to go.

So you’ve decided you want a projector, but you don’t know where to begin? Don’t panic, in reality, there are only a few simple decisions you need to make, to know what projectors will be right for you. Before you begin, you want to decide whether you will be using your new projector for displaying movies, playing video games, or giving presentations. This will affect how bright or dark your viewing room is and what resolutions you need, plus things like connection options. Also work out where you want to place your projector relative to its screen.

To begin with, you will need to consider brightness and contrast. Most projectors have their brightness stated in two ways, Lumens and foot-Lamberts. Sadly the Lumen rating is not a really useful gauge of brightness, as it often does not take into account the viewing size of the final image or reduction due to normal rather than max usage. In dark conditions such as a dedicated home theatre room, look for a brightness rating of around 40 fL, and increase it depending on how much extra ambient light your viewing room will have.

Next you need to think about the supported resolutions you want to display. The very best is 1080p,so called “Full HD”, and will allow you to display Blu-Rays and other high-definition content properly. Most games and computer presentations will only need 720p or 1024×768 resolution, so if you won’t be primarily watching movies, save some money and go for a lower-spec model. 1080p and 720p are both 16:9 widescreen resolutions, whereas 1024×768 is 4:3, which is a more square standard used by many computer monitors and older TV’s. Consider the screen you will be displaying on. To get full use of the screen, make sure it’s resolution matches that of your projector.

Contrast is often a more useful measure of projector quality than brightness. A high-quality projector will have a contrast ratio of 5,000:1 or more, all though check to see if the projector uses a “dynamic iris” to help boost its contrast range. These work by restricting the light output in dark scenes, allowing the projector to produce “blacker blacks”. Many such projectors will also just quote “on/off” contrast, which is the difference between a full black and full white screen. A better measure is ANSI contrast, which uses a chequered test pattern, and measures the difference between the light and dark squares. This value will be unaffected by any dynamic iris, and is usually a lower value.

Finally, make note of the “throw distance” of the projector. “Short Throw” projectors are designed to be placed closer to the screen and still produce a big image, whereas “long throw” projectors are the opposite. Also quoted will be the amount of zoom available, which will allow you to grow or shrink the image somewhat. Another useful feature on most projectors is lens-shift. This will allow you more flexibility in placing the projector relative to the screen by enabling you to move the image up and down or left and right by a certain amount without distorting the image.

Sure, we’ve all seen it from time to time. Perhaps a friend or an acquaintance who has invited you to their home has an amazing home theater system, complete with a movie projector and stadium seating. Most people simply dismiss the idea of keeping a projector in their home because they assume that the cost will not justify the usefulness that they can get out of the device. Some forget that they are more affordable now than ever, and they also fail to realize the many uses that the little devices have nowadays, thanks in part to their portability.

Today, projectors are being used with increasing frequency by businesses, and especially by business travelers who spend much time giving presentations. A visual aid during a presentation is a wonderful tool; not only does it aid in understanding, it keeps the audience interested. Using a visual aid such as a projector presentation is all but expected nowadays, and a projector will be required in order to project digital computerized images onto a screen for easy viewing. Projectors are often used as part of the multi-media component of plays and productions, and many churches utilize them on a regular basis to run announcements, sermon notes, song lyrics, and the like. Someone who owns a portable projector can help in filling in any and all of these needs that he or she desired.

Another place that a projector is commonly used is in educational settings. From elementary school through university programs, visual aids increase learning in a given atmosphere by giving students yet another sensory avenue by which to process information. Some children listen better by reading than by hearing, and using a projector, for example, during class, give them a chance to read what the teacher is saying instead of merely having to listen. A visual aid, especially when fun and appealing to schoolchildren, also helps to break up the monotony of the school day. A projector is useful around the home, too. Coupled with a big screen, they make a great way to watch television or a movie. Another fun use is to hook a video game system up to the projector and to view it on a large screen. The picture being created in all of these instances is so large that it allows an entire family, or even an entire extended family, to gather around a central location and enjoy the same entertainment together. To source out projectors, simple go to Google and do a search.

Home theater speaker systems comprise front stereo speakers, a center channel speaker, surround speakers, and a powered subwoofer.

Working together, these speakers create the surround sound experience of a professional movie theater in your living room. You will find several brands and models of good speakers; you have to ensure that they work as a cohesive unit. One very important aspect is voice matching. The best way to achieve this is choosing speakers from the same ‘family,’ by the same brand. Voice matching ensures a smooth flow of sound around you, creating a seamless surround effect.

The front left and right speakers offer a wide soundstage that combines with the video, creating a realistic movie experience. Apart from reproducing the musical score, front speakers also handle most of the special effects. You can find floor-standing speakers, bookshelf speakers, and satellite/subwoofer systems as front left and right speakers.

The center channel is a vital component of the home theater speaker system, delivering over 50% of the soundtrack, including almost all the dialogue of the film. Ideally, it should be located directly above or below your screen, because placing it elsewhere will disrupt the surround experience considerably. Choose its size in accordance with the sizes of the other speakers and the television set.

The surround speakers, apart from producing sounds like raindrops, or the rustling of leaves, also provides directional effects, such as a locomotive rushing by, a bullet whistling past, or the rumble of a spaceship. If the system includes a subwoofer, then most users prefer either bookshelf or satellite speakers requiring stand placement or wall mounting.

As most speakers can’t deliver that level of bass on their own, you need a subwoofer so that your home theater system delivers crucial low-frequency impact. A subwoofer can also enrich music listening; it is capable of rounding out all types of music, from classical to jazz to rock.

From ever increasing screen size to newer technologies for better pictures and sound, rapid advancements in the electronics industry age the television in our living room well before it ceases to function. Whether a television is displaced from the center of our homes due to a simple desire to upgrade or due to poor performance, millions of us need to find a way of disposing of an older set each year.

Are landfills an option?

Like most electronics devices, a television can contain a number of elements that are potentially harmful to both people and the environment, making them poor residents for landfills. The various carcinogens and neurotoxins within them can potentially leach into the water system and into the air through burning, with deadly results. Not only do these oversized devices which are disposed of in the millions each year push landfills to their capacity, but many of their more valuable materials are wasted when they are not recycled. Materials such as glass, copper, and precious metals are sacrificed when an old television is relegated to a landfill.

How about donating or giving away an old television?

Certainly charity organizations such as the Salvation Army and Goodwill will take a working television and, in many instances, will arrange convenient pick up. There are even individuals who seek out yard sales looking for old electronics devices to repair as a hobby, so this presents another option for finding people interested in an old set. There are however, more convenient methods of finding others who want a castaway television if it is in working order.

Freecycle.org is an online network that allows users to post items locally at no charge. The purpose of the site is to keep hazardous waste out of landfills by connecting people who wish to dispose of items with others who are looking for those same products.

Are there recycling options?

Manufacturers are beginning to take on greater responsibility to assure that recycling becomes an easier task in the future. Reducing the number of parts, increasing the ease of disassembly, and using materials that readily recycle are examples of some of the strategies that are the focus during the design and manufacture stage. These efforts can help assure that a television or other device can be easily and inexpensively recycled. In addition, some companies are making strides in reducing the use of potentially harmful elements in the products they produce for consumers. Panasonic, for example, began manufacturing plasma displays without lead in 2006.

For the time being however there are a number of efforts related to recycling in the US but consumers will need to do some investigation to find them. Earth911.org is one site that is dedicated to recycling efforts and assists users in finding local resources to reuse, donate, or recycle their television or other items. Another option for identifying local recycling centers is plugintoecycling.org which is a partnership between the EPA and various consumer electronics manufacturers and retailers. Panasonic, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Philips, and Samsung are among some of the major television manufacturers which have become “Plug-in Partners” that are involved in the effort to promote recycling and donation of used electronics.

As the volume of electronics waste continues to escalate and awareness of the need to recycle expands, some retailers such as Best Buy, host recycling drives. When looking for a place to take an unwanted television, it might be useful to start with a simple phone call to a few local retailers.

Although the problems posed by unwanted televisions and other electronics devices continue to grow, there are a few resources available to reduce the effect of this glut. Once consumers find they have a television they no longer need, whether it is working or not, there are others who will take it off of their hands and put it to the best possible use.
